LunaBlocks: Making furniture out of giant Lego bricks

Lego as furniture? Dude, you'd need, like, a million bricks for that… unless the bricks were gigantic, of course. That's the whole idea behind LunaBlocks — created by Thierry Nahon and Philippe Landecker of Lunatic Construction, the biggie bricks come in multiple colors and materials that are easily stacked together. Add a pane of glass or a pillow, and you've got fully functional furniture that looks straight out of Legoland!

LunaBlocks come in a number of types: your basic LunaBlock; LunaGlass, which are opaque and transparent blocks; LunaSoft, blocks made of durable polypropylene meant for kids; LunaLight, pillow-like material that's used to create comfortable seating; and LunaMetal, blocks cast in steel.

You can buy the bricks online from Homology. The prices don't seem so bad — ranging from $20 to $55 — until you realize that's per brick. Still worth it, though.

World’s tallest LEGO tower built in England

If you’re looking for the tallest tower of LEGO in the world, here's a picture of it right here. This monster was built in the Legoland Windsor theme park in the U.K. of 500,000 LEGO bricks, and stands just shy of 100 feet high. That eclipses the old record of 96.1 feet from August of last year by more than three feet, and has been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for authentication.

Notice the stabilizing guy wires, holding the enormous tower of plastic steady as it reaches to the sky. Good thing they had a crane to place the half-millionth piece atop the huge stack. Why all this falderal? Well, if you can believe it, this is the 50th anniversary of LEGO, a half-century ago shoving aside Erector Sets, coonskin caps and Hula Hoops to become one of fave diversions of ersatz builders the world over.

How LEGO Bricks Are Made

How LEGO Bricks Are Made

LEGO Bricks are actually an amazing feat of engineering and manufacturing. Each Lego Brick must be made very precisely and to exact specifications so that, when they are snapped together, they have just the right amount of grip. Not to hard to pull apart, but will still stay together. They also have to fit with millions and millions of bricks that were made in the past. Plus people like to collect Lego sets and bricks for years and then hand them down to their kids. Bricks made many years ago need to still fit with bricks made today.

To get these little toy bricks to meet these high standards, Lego bricks are made out of a complex plastic with a big scientific name called "acrylonitrile butadiene styrene". Say that 5 times fast! They also use precision-machined molds that are considered top secret. As a matter of fact, in order to keep these molds secret, Lego puts the used ones into the foundations of buildings so no one else can steal them. That's serious stuff. Also, according to the LEGO Group, the brick manufacturing process is so accurate that only 18 bricks out of every million are rejected. Every brick is inspected by hand as well. It is this accurate manufacturing process that allows bricks from 30 and 40 years ago to still connect to bricks that are built today.
